Welcome to another super year at Salem Elementary! My name is Theresa Boynton. This is my 21st year teaching, all of which have been at Salem Elementary. I have taught a straight 2nd grade for 11 years, a 1st/2nd grade combination for 2 years and this is my 8th year teaching a straight 1st grade. I have a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan-Dearborn with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Language Arts. I have a Master of Arts in Education with a Reading Specialist endorsement also from the University of Michigan--Dearborn (sorry State fans this classroom is maize and blue!). I also attend workshops and classes throughout the school year and summer to learn the best practices for students.
My husband Aaron and I have 2 wonderful girls. Ava is 13 years old and Magdalena (Lena) is 10 years old. They are the world to us and we are in awe at their discoveries as they are learning. You may hear these names a lot from your child, as I talk about them often in class.
In my classroom I work hard to build a sense of community and trust among my students, and I emphasize the idea of teamwork.
I believe each student possesses the opportunity and ability to learn, but the style in which they learn varies according to the student. I try to use as many of the multiple intelligences as I can in a given unit/lesson, for example, singing, visual aids, hands-on materials, body movements, etc. By having more than one way to present or incorporate a topic, I am better able to facilitate the different learning styles in my classroom and help my students learn more effectively.
I look forward to working with all of you this year to help your child grow and learn in first grade.
Go Blue!
Mrs. Boynton
