Student Headphones
We will be starting to use the Chromebooks in the classroom! It would be helpful to send in a pair of headphones for your student to keep in the classroom for their own personal use (Many of the students have already brought in a pair of headphones the first week of school). Please send them in a labeled Ziploc bag for safe storage. They will be returned at the end of the year.
Homework
On Monday, your child is coming home with a small homework packet. This is what our "normal" homework will look like from week to week. You will see a spelling menu attached to a content area worksheet (usually math). They will have the opportunity to choose how they want to practice their spelling words through a monthly spelling menu that will come home. You DO NOT need to do all of these choices. Pick and choose the ones that interest your First Grader! We hope that you and your student enjoy these fun, non-traditional ways to grow as writers.
A few notes about the Word List: You will see "Spelling Words" and "Thinking Words." Here is the explanation of both:
*Spelling Words*
These are a selection of 5 words from our First Grade High Frequency List. First Graders should know how to read AND write all of these words by the end of First Grade. These will be the words we practice throughout the week though not in isolation. We will continue to practice ALL as the weeks go on. Keep this in mind as you practice at home.
*Thinking Words*
These are words that follow a spelling pattern we practice throughout the week. There will not be a "list" of these words to practice, as we want to students to use the spelling pattern to "THINK" about how the word should be spelled versus memorization. This week for example, we will be practicing words that have -at in them. Some of these words could be cat, hat, splat, etc. Have you or your First Grader brainstorm words that fit this pattern to practice with.
As mentioned at Curriculum Night, homework will come home on Monday and it is due on Friday, unless otherwise specified. If your child should finish their homework earlier than Friday they can turn it in early. If your child is unable to complete their homework by Friday, and they need a little more time, just let me know. Please also make sure that your child remembers to put their name on their homework.
