Halloween
Halloween will be celebrated on October 31st. Like last year, we will not be having a "party." From 2:45-3:15pm the students will receive cider and donuts (courtesy of Three Cedar Farms) in their classroom. Afterwards, they will change into their costume (no masks, or weapons). Then all classes will meet outside on the playground to begin the parade. The parade will begin around 3:20pm. The parade will travel down South Street to Salem Road and then back to school. Please line up along the sides of the road to view everyone. Afterwards, there will be sign out sheets in the classroom if you are picking up your child after the parade. There will NOT be a signout in the cafeteria. Busers will be dismissed as usual.
Laura Loveberry Caricature and Book
Author, Illustrator, caricaturist, and speaker, visited Salem on Monday, October 28th. She used humor, puppets, and art, to encourage students to read and write. The students really enjoyed watching Mrs. Boynton volunteer to get dressed up like "Arty." Check out the pictures under the "Pictures" tab.
You get a book! You get a book!
Thank you to all of the families that ordered books from our classroom October Scholastic book order. Every time you order books through our classroom book order, we earn points for free books. Because of your generous orders this month, our class was able to receive, not only new books for our classroom library, BUT every student in class received a book to take home and keep. I can't wait to see what happens with the next book order (it goes home on Friday:)
Does your student know how to...
-How to tie their shoes? (Have them prove it to me in class to become a Shoe-perHero!)
-When their birthday is? (month, date, year)
-What their address is? (including city)
Picture Retake Day
Picture Retakes will happen on Wednesday, October 30th. If you were unhappy with your first round of photos or were absent the first time around, this is your opportunity to get your picture taken. If you are interested in retakes, please return your photos in the original envelope.
If you are ordering for the first time feel free to log onto schoolpictures.com and use the code AA530.
Spelling Menu Review
This week your student will have their normal October Spelling Menu to choose how to practice their grade level words. However, it is a REVIEW week. This means there are no new words. Therefore, use this list as a way to practice the trickiest words and not ALL of the words. Have your student choose 5-10 of the trickiest words for them to work on. Let me know if you have any questions :)

BRRR . . It is Starting to Get Cold!
You can tell that we are nearing the end of October, the weather is starting to get colder. That being said, please make sure your child is dressing appropriately for recess. The students go outside for recess, unless there is inclement weather or the temperature is below freezing with the windchill. The rule at Salem has been if it is 50 degrees or below they need to have a coat on at recess. Make it your child's job to check the weather forecast on the computer or a phone each day so they know what to wear. Also, please make sure that all of your child's things are labeled with their name. This help tremendously!
Blue Out
On November 14th South Lyon Schools are hoping to turn the district blue in support of raising awareness and funds for Type 1 diabetes. The South Lyon School community serves a number of families and students with type 1 diabetes. On November 14th please consider having your student dress in blue.
