Reading Envelopes/Behavior Charts
I will collect the reading envelopes on Wednesday, January 22nd, due to the half days and end of the card marking. I will also be collecting this week's behavior charts on Wednesday since they are not marked on half days.
Spellling and Math Focus
There will be NO new spelling words or math fact fluency focus this week. Your child is encouraged to practice any words/facts that are still tricky for him or her. I will be sending home the most recent word work check on the day that report cards are released.. This way you can know which words your child still needs to practice. Remember that the END-OF-THE-YEAR benchmark is for first graders to be able to READ and WRITE ALL 64 words. Thanks for your support at home!
Empty Cereal Boxes Needed
We will be using empty cereal boxes to decorate and store our Valentines in the near future. Please send in any empty ones you may have to donate. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PUT YOUR CHILD'S NAME ON IT. Also, I am looking for volunteer(s) that would be willing to come in the week of February 3-7 to cover the cereal boxes with white paper for us to be able to decorate them. Let me know if you are interested in this! Thanks.
Kids Heart Challenge
Mr. Maghes sent home a packet of instructions on how to support Salem's fundraiser for the American Heart Association. You can also read Mr. Knapp's Salem scoop for specific instructions. Good Luck coyotes and check out our school page here:

Brainstormers Assembly
Thank you to the PTO that provided Salem with an AMAZING assembly titled Brainstormers that got us all excited to be WRITERS! They will be returning in March to perform stories written by some of our very own coyotes! If your student is interested, they can turn in a written or typed writing piece of one or all of the following: Personal Narrative, Creative Fiction, Opinion Letter, and/or Persuasive Essay. If you need writing paper or any other resources, just let me know :) . All writing pieces are due Friday, February 7th.
Half Day Lunches
We will be having half days Wednesday-Friday this week for records day. Sack Lunches will be available for purchase on these half days of school, per the note that was sent home last week. If your child orders a sack lunch, their account will be charged accordingly. They will receive their sack lunch to take home before leaving at 11:51am. Please make it clear to your child if they are purchasing or not purchasing a sack lunch on these half days of school to avoid confusion. Thank you!
Disguise a Snowman Assignment
Last Friday your child came home with a fun family activity similar to our "Disguise a Turkey" activity in November. This time (and last time), your child is to "Disguise a Snowman." The same directions apply as before with the turkeys (they are stated in the note if you forgot). We will be doing a math activity with these snowman. The snowman is due Monday, February 3rd, but students can turn theirs in earlier if they would like.
100th Day T-Shirt Project
First graders will be celebrating the 100th day of school on Friday, February 7th. To add to the celebration, your child is invited to create a 100th day t-shirt that he/she will wear to school that day. The shirt must have 100 objects on it. This is an optional activity, but each year the students are always very excited to show off their t-shirts and creativity. Have fun!
